The Grand Tour

From London to Rome

Taste in the 18th century knew no borders. British collectors, painters and patrons looked to France for fashion, Italy for the Grand Tour, and Germany for princely refinement – while Continental artists in turn were drawn to the thriving London art market.

This new curated collection reflects the richly interconnected European continent, bringing together rediscovered works from across the British Isles and Europe.

Highlights

A Century of Distinction

From 1714 to 1837, British and European tastes became deeply intertwined, resulting in a rapid succession of design movements and new institutional standards for the fine arts.

This cultural exchange gave rise to classical proportions, scientific advances and a flourishing of aesthetics made all the more popular by an emerging wealthy middle class. Key events such as the unearthing of Pompeii, the founding of the Royal Academy of Arts and William Gilpin’s Picturesque drove an optimism that can still be seen today.
