After Claude Lorrain (1600-1682) - 18th Century Oil Classical Landscape
Description
This atmospheric landscape painting depicts a serene riverside scene with classical architecture nestled amongst verdant trees, whilst two figures rest in the foreground beneath the dappled light of an overarching tree. The composition exemplifies the idealised pastoral tradition, with its carefully balanced arrangement of natural and architectural elements creating a harmonious vista that recedes into a luminous distance, all presented within an ornate gilt Rococo frame. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
The canvas has been relined and there is historic restoration. Overall, the condition is very good. There are some surface marks to the edges of the canvas. There is craquelure to the surface, as expected for a painting of this age. The frame has some losses, most noticeably to the lower right quadrant. Corner joints of the frame are quite wide, and there has been some damage to the inner moulding of the frame; this means the canvas edge can be seen at the upper right corner.
