Benjamin Zobel (1762–1831) was a German-born artist best known for his pioneering work in sand painting, a decorative art form popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Ulm, Germany, Zobel trained as a painter and initially worked in traditional forms before developing a specialty in creating intricate, coloured sand designs on glass and other surfaces. Zobel moved to England, where he became associated with the London art scene and gained recognition for his skill in arranging coloured sand into highly detailed patterns, often mimicking marbling or natural landscapes. His work was prized for its precision and the subtle interplay of colour and texture, and he influenced decorative arts in both England and continental Europe. Throughout his career, Zobel combined technical innovation with artistic creativity, and his works were often commissioned for both public and private collections. He died in 1831, leaving a legacy as one of the foremost practitioners of sand painting in Europe.
