A fine 18th-century portrait depicting a lady of high standing. She delicately holds a miniature adorned with a neat velvet bow – possibly a likeness of herself – whilst captivating the viewer with her direct gaze and subtle, knowing smile. Her hair is styled in a high, voluminous coiffure worn without powder, a fashion more closely associated with English taste than the powdered French styles of the period. The combination of her softly ruffled attire, poised gesture, and understated accessories conveys an air of elegance, youthfulness, and gentle refinement, characteristic of late 18th-century portraiture. Condition
Discolouration to the varnish. Surface abrasions and ingrained debris are present throughout. Fine craquelure is visible across the painting. The artwork has undergone previous restoration, and the canvas has been relined. Small areas of overpainting are also evident under UV light.
