Description

From the Circle of Hubert Robert (1733-1808), comes this fine example of an 18th-century European landscape painting in the tradition of the paysage historié. The composition depicts the famous cascades at Tivoli, near Rome, a site that was almost obligatory for artists on the Grand Tour and one that Hubert Robert himself painted repeatedly. Cascading waterfalls tumble over rocky outcrops in multiple tiers. Ruined architecture crowns the hilltop, likely a reference to the Temple of the Sibyls or the Villa of Maecenas. A rustic timber bridge spans the river in the foreground. A traveller on horseback and a companion lend scale to the majestic beauty of the natural setting. Dramatic chiaroscuro, deep, brooding shadows contrasted with luminous water and warm ochre rockfaces. This particular painting holds all the characteristics of a work from his circle or workshop. The piece is housed in a beautifully gilt-effect frame with delicate running patterns. Unsigned. On canvas.

Condition

The artwork presents in very good condition for its age. A light, even patina of age is present across the surface of the artwork. Inspection under UV light reveals some previous restoration. The canvas has been previously relined. Small, localised losses to the paint layer (upper-left corner).
