Description

This pastoral landscape depicts a serene river scene framed by mature trees on either bank, with distant buildings and a church spire visible across the tranquil water. In the foreground, small figures engage in leisurely activities along the riverside, whilst the composition employs a warm, golden palette that evokes the peaceful atmosphere of the English countryside estate. Well presented in a wood frame with gilt detail. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The canvas has been relined and there appear to be signs of historic restoration, particularly to the sky. There is some craquelure to the surface. There are marks and scuffs to the surface of the painting. The frame has some marks and scuffs, as well as small losses to the gilt paint. The birdseye maple panels have several historic cracks running through them. Overall, the painting and frame are in stable condition, and the condition is typical for a picture of this age.
