Description
A well executed bust length portrait of a middle-aged gentleman, depicted against a neutral dark ground. The sitter is dressed in a dark coat with a cream and blue patterned lapel and an elaborate white cravat, reflecting the fashions of the early 19th century. His direct, assured gaze and solid bearing suggest a man of some standing, perhaps a merchant, professional, or minor bourgeois figure.
The handling is confident and sympathetic, with smooth, blended flesh tones characteristic of the German provincial portrait tradition of the period. A pleasing example of the genre well presented in a fine gilt frame. Unsigned.
This gentleman was purchased with his wife, whose portrait is also available separately - please see item SX706. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
The canvas has been relined and there has been some restoration to the surface with areas of overpainting and cleaning. There is some craquelure to the surface. Signs of wear are consistent with age. There are minor marks and scuffs to the frame with small losses of gilt paint.
