Description

A stunning early 17th-century devotional work depicting the Virgin Mary, Queen of Heaven, tenderly holding the Christ Child. Mary is elaborately portrayed wearing a golden crown with flowing dark hair, draped in a teal blue mantle fastened with a gold brooch. This Spanish School painting demonstrates strong Flemish influences through its distinctive style. The subjects' rosy cheeks and stylised facial features, combined with bold colour usage, create a beautiful contrast with the composition's inherent softness and intimacy. The work is beautifully presented in a hand-carved 17th-century Spanish baroque frame (possibly original), ebonised and decorated with a rolling acanthus motif. Unsigned. On canvas.

Condition

The overall condition of this work is very good, considering age. Evidence of previous professional restoration is present throughout. The canvas has been relined to the reverse, and examination under UV light reveals discrete areas of overpainting across the surface. All prior conservation work appears to have been executed to a high standard. Natural age-related craquelure is present across the paint surface, consistent with a work of this age. The carved wooden frame exhibits light wear, which contributes to the authentic patina and character of the piece.
