18th Century Oil - The Penitent Saint Peter
Description
A fine c.1800 oil painting depicting Saint Peter in Penitence, one of the most popular subjects in Baroque religious art. The scene shows Peter's anguished prayer of repentance after denying Christ three times, portrayed with clasped hands and an upward tearful gaze. The cock represents the central symbol of Peter's denial; after the cock crowed, Peter "wept bitterly" (Luke 22:62). The Keys of Heaven, given to Peter by Christ ("I will give you the keys of the kingdom," Matthew 16:19), rest at the bottom, symbolising his role as the first Pope. The warm chiaroscuro lighting, handling of the drapery, and emotional intensity draw the viewer into the composition. Unsigned. On canvas.Condition
The work is in overall very good condition, consistent with its age. The canvas has been relined verso, with a localised repair noted near the centre of the picture plane. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals discrete areas of previous restoration and overpainting, and the varnish layer exhibits some discolouration, likely due to oxidisation over time. Light scuffs and abrasions are present to the perimeter, consistent with age and handling.
