A beautiful devotional painting after Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472–1553), depicting the Madonna of Grace. The Virgin Mary is shown in the classic colour pairing of red robe and blue mantle, symbolising humanity and divinity. Her white veil adorned with stars references her title Stella Maris (Star of the Sea). The Christ Child stands upright, reaching tenderly to touch her cheek. A golden halo glow provides a soft celestial quality to the piece as a whole. Unsigned. On canvas.
Condition
The artwork exhibits signs of wear consistent with age. Fine craquelure is observed throughout the paint surface. Inspection under UV light reveals previous restoration. The canvas has been relined. Various surface marks/abrasions are present. Small losses to the paint layer.
