This fine 19th-century religious scene shows a child watched over by a guardian angel, likely of Belgian origin. The motif of an angel protecting a vulnerable child draws on long Christian traditions, but became especially popular in the Victorian era. Rising child mortality and a strong current of sentimental religiosity made the guardian angel a powerful and comforting image for audiences across Europe. Unsigned.
