Artist Biography
Robert Reginald Whale (1805-1887) was a British-born Canadian painter. Born in Altarnun, Cornwall, he emigrated with his family to Canada in 1852, settling near Brantford, Ontario, in Burford. A prolific artist, Whale supported his family entirely through the sale of his work—no small feat in mid-nineteenth-century Ontario. He exhibited with the Ontario Society of Artists and the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts from 1881 onward. Whale's portraits, influenced by Joshua Reynolds, typically show the sitter gazing directly out of the frame, highlighted against a dark background. His landscapes, while employing European compositional conventions such as framing trees and small figures in the middle distance, drew their subject matter entirely from the Canadian scenery around him. Together, his works form a valuable historical record of early Canada. His paintings are held by several major institutions, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Museum London, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the McCord Museum of Canadian History. Whale's artistic legacy extended through his family: two of his sons, John Claude and Robert Heard Whale, and his nephew John Hicks Whale, were also painters. He died in Brantford on 2 July 1887.
