Flemish School 18th Century Oil - Christ's Entombment
Description
This stunning 18th-century Flemish religious scene portrays the entombment of Christ, capturing the solemn moment his lifeless body is carried into the tomb by devoted followers. Characteristically Flemish in style, the work employs dramatic chiaroscuro, with deep shadows and luminous highlights drawing the viewer’s gaze to Christ’s pale form. The figures are rendered with striking emotional intensity, their grief conveyed through tender gestures and downcast expressions. Rich details including flowing drapery and softly illuminated flesh showcase the Flemish mastery of texture and realism. Unsigned. Beautifully presented in an ornate gilt frame with a flowing acanthus-leaf motif. On canvas.Condition
Fine craquelure and light abrasions throughout. Some discolouration to the varnish. The artwork has been previously restored: the canvas has been relined and repaired, with areas of overpainting visible under UV light. Overall the artwork remains in very good condition for its age. Minor wear to the frame, overall it is in fine condition.
