Description

Painted in the style of the late 19th century, this genre scene depicts three figures passing through a monastery courtyard. A friar in a black habit holds a small calling bell and candle. A young homeless boy, barefoot, looks up at the friar as he escorts him to the dining hall for a hot, warming meal. An elderly priest, wearing a white surplice and stole, follows the pair behind. The painting is beautifully presented in a late 19th century swept frame with high relief shell and acanthus decoration, complete with internal slip. Signed 'Max Bruck' lower left. On panel.

Condition

Fine cracking in the panel substrate is observed throughout the paint surface. These fine surface cracks follow the natural grain of the panel. Small, localised losses to the paint layer occur in the lower right quadrant. Inspection under UV light reveals no apparent restoration. The antique frame has minor surface wear, including small chips, scuffs, and stable cracking. Two larger moulding losses to the frame's centre and lower ornament (left-hand side). Slight movement to the top two corner ornaments. Small losses to the running pattern. Overall, the artwork presents in good condition for its age.
