Description

An evocative 18th-century oil depicting St Francis Xavier - the 16th-century Catholic missionary and co-founder of the Jesuit order. The artist has depicted the figure with elements such as the burning fire in his heart to represent his devotion to Christ, the Jesuit cassock to signify his religious identity, and the crucifix in his hand to symbolise his missionary zeal. Unsigned. Well presented in a gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for an artwork of this age, including notable craquelure and paint loss throughout. Some slackening to the canvas. The artwork has undergone previous restoration: the canvas has been relined and there is significant overpainting throughout.
