Description
A compelling religious scene depicting a cloaked hermit absorbed in the study of the Bible before a crucifix. He is surrounded by vanitas symbols - such as the skull and burnt out candle - which serve as reminders of mortality and the fleeting nature of earthly life. The figure may be Paul of Thebes, the fist Christian hermit. Although the composition bears a resemblance to David Teniers' depiction of the saint's meeting with Saint Anthony Abbot, his traditional identifying attribute of a cloak of palm leaves is absent. An alternative identification is Saint Jerome. The book and quill would support this as Jerome revised a translation of the bible. Once again, however, his usual identifying attributes (lions and a cardinal's hat) are not present. It is therefore also possible that the figure is intended as a generic hermit, a popular subject in European art. The composition and symbolic elements bear a resemblance to the work of Gerrit Dou, who frequently painted hermits. The work is beautifully presented in a gilt frame with ornate running patterns. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
Overall the condition is good for a picture of this age. Discolouration and craquelure, as well as some faint scratches. Evidence of restoration, including relining and areas of overpainting. Marks and scuffs to the frame.
