A beautiful 18th century copy of the original Italian Renaissance masterpiece, "La Zingarella" by Correggio. The scene shows the Virgin Mary, cradling her son in a forest glade on their journey into Egypt. Several putti gather overhead and a bird and white rabbit (symbolising both Mary's virginity and fertility) can be seen at the lower left. The painting is well presented in a plain gilt-effect frame. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Inspection under UV light reveals areas of previous restoration and overpainting. The canvas has been relined. Light abrasions are noted to the perimeter of the painting. The frame has minor surface wear. Overall, the artwork presents in very good condition for its age.
