Paul Falconer Poole - 19th Century Oil Jael and Sisera

Description

A striking history painting by Paul Falconer Poole (1807–1879), depicting a scene from the Book of Judges. Following his defeat by the Israelites, the Canaanite general Sisera flees to a nearby settlement, where the Kenite woman Jael takes him in and promises to conceal him from the authorities. Once Sisera falls asleep, Jael kills him by driving a tent peg through his temple, an act for which she is praised for her courage in the Bible. Here, Jael shows Barak, who had been pursuing Sisera, what she has done. The painting is monogrammed to the lower left and is well presented in a gilt frame. On canvas board.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and warping to the board. Inspection under UV light reveals no apparent restoration. Marks and scuffs to the frame. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
