Description
A finely painted nineteenth century oil depicting Saint Jerome living as a hermit during his period of ascetic retreat in the Syrian desert. A red cardinal's cloak, one of his identifying attributes, is draped across his knees, upon which a religious text rests. The book bears the inscription "Meditationes Sacrae," accompanied by an illustration of the Passion. This is the title of a book written by the English philosopher Francis Bacon in 1597. He rests his hand on a skull, a symbol of vanity and another of his traditional attributes. The work is signed "van Kyn" to the lower right and is well presented in an aged gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and craquelure. The canvas has been previously relined, and inspection under UV light reveals areas of previous restoration. Light wear to the frame. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
