The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is a crack at the lower left quadrant and some light abrasion to the paint around the nun and left child's feet. The frame has some discolouration and staining to the left side.

Evelyn Stuart Hardy came from a family of artists living in Bristol. From an early age she contributed work to periodicals, and illustrated many books for Nister who is well known for publishing children’s “Pop Up” books and Nursery rhymes in the Victorian/Edwardian periods. She illustrated amongst others “Peep Bo Pictures” (1898). and “The Land Long Ago: A visit to Fairyland with Humpty Dumpty” (1890). These books are much sought after. Hardy was producing illustrations for Nister between 1890 and 1910.
