Description

A fine c.1700 Italian Baroque painting depicting the pivotal Gospel scene of Jesus's presentation before Roman governor Pontius Pilate. Jesus, clothed in a simple white robe with hands bound, is flanked by two guards, whilst the crowd behind gestures upward, conveying agitation and accusation. Pilate, in a voluminous red robe and hood, turns away from Christ, symbolically washing his hands. This devotional work is well presented in a gilt frame. Unsigned. Provenance: Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia On canvas.

Condition

The artwork exhibits signs of wear consistent with age. Fine craquelure is observed throughout the paint surface. There are small, localised losses to the paint layer. Inspection under UV light reveals previous restoration. There is a surface scratch to the upper left-hand corner. The canvas has been previously relined. The frame has minor surface wear, including small chips and scuffs. Overall, the artwork presents in good condition for its age.
