Description

A captivating nineteenth-century oil painting after Bartolome Esteban Murillo (1618-1682) depicting Saint John the Baptist in the rocky wilderness where he is said to have lived. Although traditionally portrayed as a young man in the wilderness, he is represented here as an angelic child, emphasising themes of innocence and purity. These themes are further reinforced by the lamb, a symbol of Christ's sacrifice. The original work is in the collection of the National Gallery. Well presented in a dark wooden frame with a gold inner edge. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The artwork has undergone restorative work, including canvas tear repairs and areas of overpainting. Discolouration and craquelure to the paint are evident, as is typical for a picture of this age. Faint impressions from the stretchers are also visible. Scuffs to the frame leave it with an intentionally distressed finish.
