Description

A beautiful example of an early 18th century devotional painting depicting the Holy Family in a landscape. On the left stands Mary, wearing a flowing pink dress with blue drapery, her head surrounded by a golden halo. She gazes gently downwards, her hands positioned in a gesture of grace. In the centre is the child Jesus, also haloed, dressed in a blue tunic with a vibrant red cloak. He appears to be holding hands with both Mary and Joseph, serving as a connecting figure between them. On the right stands Joseph in golden-brown robes that create dramatic folds and shadow. A white lily, a traditional symbol of purity, is visible in his hand. Above Jesus, in the upper centre of the composition, a white dove representing the Holy Spirit radiates divine light. The painting is well presented in a carved wooden frame with a bold scrolling acanthus pattern. Unsigned. On copper plate.

Condition

Inspection under UV light reveals minor overpainting to Mary's dress. Signs of age-related wear to the frame including chips/cracking to the outer profile. The overall condition of the artwork is very good.
