Description
Titian painted several versions of the ecce homo, exploring the emotional power of the subject in subtly different compositions. This nineteenth-century copy is after the version painted for Charles V, now held by the Museo del Prado in Madrid. Unlike other treatments in which Pontius Pilate and attendant figures appear alongside Christ, this composition isolates him entirely. This change heightens the sense of intimacy: the viewer is drawn in and shares in Christ's suffering. The work is attractively presented in a gilt frame. Unsigned. On board.Condition
Discolouration and faint scratches to the paint. Slight warping to the board. Areas of overpainting. Light wear to the frame.
