Description

An exceptional 18th century devotional portrait depicting Christ as the Man of Sorrows, crowned with thorns in a moment of sacred suffering. Rich in biblical symbolism, the composition features a bulrush representing faith and trust in God's word, while a red rope signifies the prophetic promise of Christ's Second Coming. The work is presented in a circular tondo format symbolizing eternity and divine completeness and is distinguished by its multi-layered painted frame and punched palmette mount. Unsigned. On canvas on oval stretcher.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age. The canvas has been relined to the reverse. Inspection under UV light reveals several areas of restoration and overpainting. Areas of craquelure have been previously stabilised. Some marks and light scratches to the surface of the portrait. Light soiling/scuffs to the frame. The overall condition of the artwork is very good considering age.
