An impressively-sized canvas after David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690) depicting the Temptation of Saint Anthony, an often-repeated story in art and literature in which the devil subjects Anthony - who has retired to the dessert to live as a hermit - to numerous temptations, usually represented as beautiful women or demonic creatures. The subject has been painted by numerous artists, such as Hieronymus Bosch, Michelangelo, and Salvador Dalí. The Teniers interpretation upon which this work is based is in the collection of the Louvre. Well presented in a gilt frame. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age including discolouration, craquelure, and warping to the canvas. Impressions from the stretchers are visible. Areas of overpainting.
