A fine nineteenth-century copy of Italian Renaissance painter Antonio da Correggio's (1489–1534) 'Adoration of the Shepherds,' also known as 'Nativity' or 'Holy Night.' The original was commissioned in 1522 by Alberto Pratoneri for the family chapel in the church of San Prospero of Reggio Emilia. It is now in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, Germany. Well presented in an antique gilt frame. Unsigned. On metal.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including some discolouration. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. Scuffs, stable cracking, and small losses to the frame. Signs of woodworm on the frame, which has been fully treated. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
