In this dramatic 18th-century religious composition, the body of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga lies serene upon a boat, surrounded in celestial radiance. Cherubs gather above, bearing witness as his soul ascends to heaven. Beyond, ships navigate stormy waters past plague-ravaged towns. The scene alludes to his final sacrifice – while still a student at the Roman College, he succumbed to illness after tending to victims of the plague. Unsigned.
Condition
Considerable craquelure throughout. Losses of paint, notably to the edges. Wear to the edges of the canvas. The artwork has undergone previous restoration, including tear repairs and corresponding overpainting. The canvas has been relined. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
