Description
A naive painting in which a group of children scrutinise something on the sleeve of the boy in white. Many elements of the scene humorously suggest a sense of chaos, such as the shutter nearly falling off its hinges and the water bouncing off the edge of a jug as the maid is distracted by the children. In the manner of Thomas Webster RA (1800-1886) who popularised such genial genre scenes of children. Presented in an ornate gilt wooden frame. Unsigned. Label to the verso. On panel.Condition
There is some discolouration to the varnish, craquelure, and a small white paint splatter to the lower-left corner. There are some small losses to the paint at the centre of the left edge. There are some small chips and scuffs to the frame. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration.
