The infant Samuel, the last judge and first prophet of Israel, clasps his hands in prayer and gazes heavenward in this fine copy after a 1776 work by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792). Reynolds encouraged his students at the Royal Academy to study the techniques and subjects of the Old Masters. Here, he adopts the earthy brown tones and light of Rembrandt. Reynolds's decision to depict Samuel as a child was seen as unusual, given the important roles that he would play later in his life. By depicting him as a child, Reynolds foregrounds his innocence and the weight of the tasks that lie before him. Well presented in a gilt frame. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
