John Raphael Smith after Morland - Original 1799 Mezzotint. Engraved by John Raphael Smith, engraver to the Prince of Wales, after George Morland, published by J. R. Smith in 1799, King Street, Covent Garden, London. Fixed at the top edge to backing card. On laid. Condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and age toning, some minor surface scratched in places. Trimmed to just outside the plate margins. From the British Museum Archives: This is an altered late state of James Ward's 'Fern Burners', with changed title and lettering. The falsified lettering on the print erroneously attributes it to John Raphael Smith after George Morland, and was presumably changed in the later XIXc, when Smith and Morland were more fashionable than James Ward.
