Fine Framed Early 19th Century Oil - American Church Interior at Christmas

Item Sold

Sulis Fine Art is proud to present an impressive study of a church interior. The artist has masterfully captured the dramatic vaultage of the high ceilings and large alcove adorned with red fabric. The substantial altarpiece is the main attraction, with a large triptych depicting a mass of figures looking upwards towards God. Christmas garlands wrap around each pillar and a crisp winter sky can be picked out through the large windows to the right. The figures are dressed in typical clothing for the early 19th century and appear to be slowly milling out of the church while the choir sings.

This unusual scene is possibly the First Church in Albany, New York, also known as The First Reformed Church. The building was designed by Philip Hooker and built in the period of 1797-1799. The similarities of the interior architecture can be noted by comparing the painting with the included image of the Church in 1937.

Presented in a contemporary black frame. On canvas laid to board. Unsigned.

The condition is good for a picture of this age. The colours are still vivid and areas of the composition have been restored to a high standard. Inspection under UV light reveals small touches of overpainting to areas of paint loss scattered across the picture, mostly to the outer edges. With craqueleure and very minor surface abrasions to the upper half of the painting. Finished with a light varnish.
