Description
An impressive nineteenth-century work after a sixteenth-century painting commonly attributed to Ludovico Carracci (1555–1619). The scene depicts the conversion of Paul the Apostle, who, after encountering the risen Christ, ceased persecuting Christians and became a follower of Jesus. The original work was commissioned as an altarpiece for the Basilica di San Francesco in Bologna and is now housed in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Bologna. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
The artwork has undergone restorative work, including relining and areas of overpainting. Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and craquelure. Wear around the edges of the canvas.
