Early 19th Century Oil - Portrait of a Lady in Black
Description
This fine early 19th-century portrait depicts a refined lady rendered in a distinctly Romantic style. Her cheeks are delicately flushed, her complexion porcelain, and her dark hair neatly styled in tight, face-framing ringlets with a tall, sculpted topknot characteristic of the late 1830s. She wears a bertha-style dress adorned with finely ruched trim and fashionable gigot sleeves that billow just below the shoulders. A delicate double-strand gold chain and slender gold drop earrings lend a quiet sense of elegance and status, standing out subtly against the dark fabric. Unsigned. Beautifully presented in an ornate gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
A light, even patina of age is present across the surface of the artwork. Fine craquelure and light abrasions throughout. Tears to the canvas have been previously restored. There is considerable bitumen deterioration to the darkest areas of the painting, including the dress and hair. Small chips and indentations to the frame. Stable cracking to the frame. Overall the artwork remains in good condition for its age.
