Description

A truly beautiful early 20th Century oil, capturing a frank and domestic moment. A woman, in an apron and cap, takes a moment of rest from her daily toils, to read from a book. The composition and lighting give much to the narrative as she leans forward in her chair, not quite fully relaxing, poised to stand. The book held open by one hand, is rendered in a golden yellow and is the brightest object in the painting, highlighting the importance of the gentle moment.

This painting is done in a style typical of the members of the Bloomsbury Group and whether or not it is by one of the members, it was certainly painted at a contemporaneous time and is of excellent quality.

The painting has been signed to the reverse of the canvas and has been presented in a handsome gilt frame with floral corner ornamentation and lamb's tongue strap work.

On canvas.

Condition

The painting has some discolouration. There are horizontal striations or creases across the canvas, possibly from the canvas have been previously stored rolled up before framing. There is a small area of abrasion to the paint at the centre of the left edge. The frame has two holes, one at either side of the left and right edges. There is some tarnishing to the gilt, losses to the two upper corners and some minor areas of restoration.
