A fine 19th-century oil portrait of a bearded old man in a turban with a soft feather pin, styled in the manner of 18th-century artist Christian Dietricy (1712 to 1774). The study captures the gentleman in profile against a dark ground, his weathered features and long white beard picked out by the warm glow of natural light. The palette is dramatic and earthy, with browns and blacks lifting the deep red of the robe and giving the sitter a strong sense of character. The portrait is well presented in a gilt effect frame with swept rails. Unsigned. On panel.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including light marks and abrasions to the surface of the painting. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of previous overpainting throughout. The frame has minor surface wear, including two small losses to the lower left ornament. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
