Attrib. Franz Xaver Mandl - 19th Century Oil Young Boy & His Faithful Companion
Description
A magnificent mid 19th century European School oil on canvas portrait of a young boy in burgundy dress with white stockings, accompanied by his loyal dog. A straw hat rests casually on the ground to the left, whilst the background captures idyllic scenery of distant mountains and ancient ruins. The painting is well presented in an elaborate gilt frame with swept rails, floral ornamentation, and intricate lion's head mouldings at the corners. On canvas.Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of restoration and retouching to the lower half of the composition. The canvas looks to have been previously cleaned and craquelure stabilized. The painting could benefit from some further retouching and revarnishing. Slight yellowing to the current varnish layer. Signs of wear to the gilt frame include several small moulding losses, a loss to the lower left hand corner and a repair to the top left hand corner. The overall condition of the artwork is good.
