Artist Biography
Armand Doré (1824-1882) was a French landscape painter active in the mid-19th century. He specialised in rural scenes, riverbanks, forests, and village life, working in a naturalistic style influenced by the Barbizon School. His paintings emphasise atmospheric light, stable composition, and careful observation rather than dramatic effects. Doré trained in Paris and exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from the 1850s onward. He worked within traditional academic structures while adopting elements of plein-air painting. His restrained palette and controlled brushwork place his work between Romantic landscape painting and later realism. Although never a major public figure, Doré maintained a steady professional career and sold works to private collectors in France and Belgium. After his death in 1882, his reputation faded as modern movements reshaped French art, but his work remains valued as an example of 19th-century poetic realism.
