Description

Figures gather in prayer within a vast cathedral interior. Peczely employs loose, impressionistic brushwork and renders the background in hazy vertical streaks, providing the scene with a holy, otherworldly atmosphere. What is most compelling about the work, however, is Peczely's mastery of light, which pours through the cathedral windows to illuminate the reverent figures in a divine glow. Signed to the lower left. Well presented in an ornate gilt-effect frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age including discolouration and craquelure. The artwork has undergone some restoration including relining and overpainting. Light wear to the frame. Restoration to the ornamentation to the lower left.

Size

39 x 49cm (15.4" x 19.3")
