This characterful genre painting by German artist Wilhelm Jakob Hertling (1849-1926) depicts an elderly traveller standing in a rustic inn. His clothes are worn and he holds a cane in his hand, his sack resting on the floor beside him. The work is signed to the lower right and is well presented in a gilt frame with ornate running patterns. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and craquelure. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. Wear around the edges of the canvas. Wear to the frame, including stable cracking and small losses. Parts of the frame have been remoulded.
