Description
Two men in vibrant cavalier fashion stand over the body of another in this theatrical genre scene by French artist Georges Appert (1850-1934). One of the men raises his pistol and takes aim. Appert painted numerous genre scenes featuring figures in elaborate historical costume, evidently finding inspiration in the character and narrative opportunities they offered. Signed to the lower right. Well presented in a gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
The artwork has undergone restorative work, including relining and areas of overpainting. Discolouration and areas of craquelure. Light wear to the frame. Despite the noted imperfections, the condition is good for a picture of this age overall and the piece presents well.
