A beautifully staged portrait depicting a woman poised with her arm resting on the back of a chair. She wears a black dress with a deep lace collar and a brooch. The larger petticoats and overskirts are suggestive of the fashions of the later 19th century, around the 1870s. Before her is a fine end table with a silver urn and book placed upon it. Unsigned. Finely presented in a gilt frame with On canvas.
Condition
The painting has undergone light surface restoration with small sections of overpainting to the background. There is widespread craquelure to the surface. Some light discolouration to the varnish. Some wear and cracking to the frame.
