Carl Leopold Voss was a German painter and illustrator active primarily in Munich. Born in Rome in 1856, he was the son of the sculptor Karl Voss, which placed him in an artistic household from the outset. He later trained at the Munich Academy under Lindenschmit — referring to Wilhelm von Lindenschmit the Younger, a leading figure in the Munich school of history and genre painting. Voss worked in both Munich and Rome, producing oils, watercolours, and gouaches. His output centred on genre scenes, domestic interiors, and the occasional landscape. Recurring subjects included quiet bourgeois and rustic interiors (often featuring women at windows, musical instruments such as clavichords and violins, or figures absorbed in everyday tasks), tavern scenes, and sentimental narrative pieces with titles such as *Liebespaar am Fenster* (Lovers at the Window, 1891), *Liebeskummer* (Lovesickness), and *Zur Grossmutter* (To Grandmother). He also painted views of historic German towns, including a series of interiors from Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Dinkelsbühl, and occasional Dutch landscape subjects. Voss exhibited at the Munich Glaspalast in the late 1880s and 1890s and continued working into the final years of his life — one of his interior studies of the almshouse passage in Dinkelsbühl is dated to 1921, the year of his death. Examples of his work are held in public collections including the Bavarian State Painting Collections, the Geschichtsmuseum in Dinkelsbühl, and the National Museum in Warsaw. He died in Munich in 1921 at the age of 65. He is documented in the standard reference Thieme-Becker artists' lexicon, though detailed biographical scholarship on him remains limited, and today he is known chiefly through the steady appearance of his paintings at European auction.
