French School - Early 19th Century Oil Lady with a Coral Necklace
Description
An unassuming yet quietly compelling 19th-century portrait of a fashionable woman, elegantly dressed in a rich teal gown with a delicate white lace cap and collar. She wears a striking necklace of red coral, its vivid colour drawing the eye to the sitter's throat. The use of red in jewellery and dress acquired particular significance in the years surrounding the French Revolution, with red accessories associated with remembrance of those who had been guillotined; the necklace can therefore be read as a subtle visual reference to the bloodshed during this turbulent period. At first glance a modest portrait, its fashions and symbolism give the work a fascinating historical dimension. Well presented in a fine gilt frame. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
Minor surface marks and abrasions. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of previous restoration. The artwork has been overpainted, most noticeably to the face. There have been two canvas repairs to the centre and upper right corner. Undulation to the canvas. The frame has minor surface wear, scuffs, and some minor dents. The artwork is in good condition for its age.
