Tom Gower (b.1938) was born in Leeds, Yorkshire. He quickly became interested in the sea and boats which led him to build several boats himself, which he sailed at every opportunity. His love of nautical things soon found him transferring his boating experiences onto canvas, and he eventually took the ultimate step of becoming a professional marine artist. Tom's love for the sea is apparent in his paintings. His use of light and shade and strong bold colours, highlighted by their warmth, capture the mood of all the different aspects of Cornwall. Gower and his family moved down to St. Ives in the 1970s. Gower was also a professional aviation artist and painted many different detailed pictures of a variety of warplanes, including Lancasters, Spitfires, and Vulcans. As well as this, Gower has turned his hand to many subjects including flowers, swans, seagulls, clowns, and much more.
