Rodney Pearce is a British painter and teacher, a Londoner who drew inspiration from atmospheric locations in Britain and abroad. At the age of thirteen he was awarded a scholarship to Reigate School of Art, subsequently studying at Croydon Art School under Fred Dubery, before moving in 1959 to Chelsea School of Art, where he gained his National Diploma in Design under Vivian Pitchforth. Between 1963 and 1989, when he became a full-time painter, Pearce mainly taught for the Inner London Education Authority. He also worked as an illustrator during this period. While showing at the New Art Centre, Pearce was approached by film director John Schlesinger to paint works for the set of the 1965 film Darling, starring Julie Christie, who subsequently bought most of them. His subjects include the Thames, Venice, and other atmospheric urban and coastal settings, working in both oil and watercolour. Since 1990 he has held numerous solo exhibitions and participated in many mixed shows, also exhibiting in public exhibitions including the NEAC and the RI. In 2003 he received three large commissions for the ocean liner 'Queen Mary II'. He has exhibited at the David Curzon Gallery, Rowley Gallery Contemporary Arts, Omell, Mall and New Grafton Galleries, and Island Fine Arts on the Isle of Wight. Works are held in collections including those of Barclays Bank plc and Sir Richard Branson.
