A wonderful perspective work by Belgian artist Jean Van Cleemput (1881-1953). The composition depicts a gentleman walking alone through a quiet rural village flanked by bare winter trees and weathered stone cottages on either side. Cleemput employs a muted palette and loose, impressionistic brushwork to capture the melancholic mood of a bleak countryside day. Signed to the lower left. The painting is well presented in a decorative gilt frame. On millboard.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. Light scuffs and dirtying to the surface of the painting. Inspection under UV light reveals minor overpainting. The gilt effect frame is in good condition.
