This charming mid-19th-century landscape painting captures an idyllic countryside scene, where locals gather water at a gently flowing stream. To the right, a cluster of houses rests atop a small hill, overlooking the verdant fields beyond. Rendered with soft yet finely detailed brushstrokes, the composition beautifully conveys the warm, golden light bathing the landscape. Faintly signed to the lower right. Beautifully presented in a swept gilt frame with a linen slip. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Fine craquelure and light abrasions throughout. Discolouration to the varnish. The painting has undergone previous restoration: the canvas has been relined and inspection under UV light reveals small areas of overpainting. Overall the artwork remains in good condition for its age. Wear to the frame, including scuffs, chips, small losses and fine cracking. Light staining to the linen slip. Overall the frame remains in good condition for its age.
