Donald Ewart Milner painter, stained glass artist and teacher, born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire. He studied at Camberwell School of Art & Crafts under Walter Bayes and Randolph Schwabe and at the Royal College of Art under William Rothenstein. His professional life was largely devoted to art education, his appointments being at Birmingham School of Art, 1924, Head Master, Aston School of Art, Birmingham, 1926-29, Principal, Gloucester Municipal School of Art, 1929-34 and his last appointment at the West of England College of Art, Bristol, 1934-58.
He was a Past-President of the National Society for Art Education and a Past Chairman at the Association of Art Institutions. The Royal West of England Academy elected Milner a member in 1936 and he acted as Secretary, 1951-67, Chairman of the RWA Council, 1967-70, Vice-President, 1970-74 and President of the RWA, 1974.
He was awarded the OBE for services to Education in 1952 and the Honorary Degree of MA at the University of Bristol in 1957. Milner was also a member of the Bristol Savages. Originally trained as a stained glass artist, he was responsible for the design and making of windows in various parts of the country, including the Law Courts, Bristol, and the large window above the main entrance to the University of Bristol. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the New English Art Club and as well as with the Bath Society of Artists and in many provincial galleries. His paintings and drawings have been bought by the Bristol Art Gallery, Gloucester Museum Services, Government Art Collection, Hambro's Bank, Herbert Art Gallery and the Jerwood Foundation. His father James Hiley Milner was also an artist.
