A fine late 19th century etching by the Scottish artist Robert Walker Macbeth (1848-1910). He has depicted figures crossing a small river on a wooden ferry. Inscribed in graphite on the reverse 'Gypsies and Gleaners on a Cambridgeshire Ferry'.Very well presented in a card mount. Signed and dated in the plate. On laid.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and minor foxing.

Artist Biography
Robert Walker Macbeth was a painter and engraver born in Glasgow in 1848. He was the son of painter Norman Macbeth. Macbeth was educated at Edinburgh, in Friedrichsdorf, Germany, and the RSA Schools. He painted landscapes and rustic scenes as well as being one of the first illustrators on The Graphic. A fine etcher, Macbeth was elected RE when the Society was founded. Many of his landscapes were painted in Lincolnshire and in the West Country, although he spent much of his life in London. He exhibited seventy pictures at the RA among which were several hunting scenes. He was elected RE in 1880, RI, 1882, ROI, 1893, RWS, 1901 and RA, 1903. Examples of his work are in the collection of the Tate Gallery and in Adelaide Art Gallery.
